If you are a senior age 64 and older, you are probably used to the fact that every insurance company and every insurance agent is going to send you marketing material in the mail and via email toward the end of each year. Especially if you are turning 65. The wave of information sent your way can cause an overwhelming sensation coupled with confusion.

Do I have to pick a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period?

Well, if you are trying to choose a Medicare Advantage plan, then Yes. You can only choose or change your Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period. If you are looking for a Medicare Supplement, you can shop all year round for that! You don’t need to wait until the AEP comes around.

When is the Annual Enrollment Period?

The Annual Enrollment Period is from October 15th to December 7th.

So I can choose a Medicare Supplement anytime of the year?

Technically, Yes. With Medicare Supplements, or Medigap policies, you can “carrier hop” if you will at anytime however, if you don’t have a qualifying event such as losing employer coverage, you are subject to medical underwriting so the carriers can deny you coverage based on your medical history. So the best time to enroll into a Medicare Supplement plan is when you first turn 65 because you are guaranteed acceptance regardless of your medical history. The only other time you are guaranteed acceptance is if you have one of those qualifying life events. I have included a link below for a list of the most common events.
